A healing environment for paediatric patients

Patients and visitors to Cabrini’s paediatric ward now get a taste of iconic Australian locations.The door to each patient’s room is now covered with a colourful decal representing one of the many iconic locations, including Byron Bay, Sydney and Gold Coast.Paediatric ward Associate Nurse Unit Manager Meg Brown said the artwork, completed by students at Lauriston Girls’ School, has really lifted the atmosphere of the unit.“It’s been such a terrific initiative to work alongside our community to make this happen. It obviously visually looks a lot better than a blank door, but also the psychological impact it’s had.“Now, instead of saying a patient is in room 3, we say that they’re in Byron Bay – it’s something that’s really brought a big smile to the faces of our patients, their families and our staff,” she said.In addition to the doors, both reception desks are now covered in artwork completed by students at Malvern Central Primary and Malvern Primary schools.Grade three student Noah provided a drawing of the sun, with its tongue sticking out and was thrilled to see his masterpiece on display.“I hope the people that come here also enjoy it.”Swapneel, also in grade three contributed six drawings to the new piece.“I just decided to draw things that make me happy and I hope that’s what people feel when they look at them.”Meanwhile, along the main corridor a jungle scene, complete with tigers, giraffes and lions now greets new admissions.Paediatric ward Unit Manager Clara Officer said the injection of colour and creativity into the ward will have numerous benefits.“It’s well researched that children’s reactions to their environment directly affect their physical health,” she said.“A healing environment consists of four elements: emotions, space design, interpersonal interaction and pleasant surroundings. I think this ward now ticks all those boxes.“My sincere thanks to all those, including our generous donors, who made this happen.”
