“My Will is probably the best chance I’ve got in my life to really make a difference that’s really worth something.”
Barbara McFerran suffered a heart attack when she was 40. It took 12 years before it was properly diagnosed with blocked arteries, and she received a quadruple bypass.
“I had open heart surgery at the age of 52. After collapsing, I was rushed straight to Cabrini. I was so grateful to be taken there. I remember the relief when I finally got there, after years of angina pain, needle in my arm, being hooked up to a machine and I remember feeling: ‘I’m safe, I’m safe. Now I’m going to be looked after’. I remember the people treated me so well and were so kind to me. I couldn’t have been better cared for. I was so impressed.”
Barbara, a keen hiker and knitter, is grateful for the care she received at Cabrini. “I want other people to have that same feeling and experience of relief that I felt at Cabrini” she says. “The feeling that they can relax now, somebody’s going to look after them and they can feel safe.”
Barbara has chosen to include a gift in her Will to Cabrini so that she can help others in the future. “My Will is probably the best chance I’ve got in my life to really make a difference that’s really worth something” says Barbara. “I feel the greatest thing I can do for others is leave a gift in my Will so others may benefit and hopefully lives will be saved. That would be a terrific achievement, even though I won’t be here to see it.”
Barbara has many philanthropic interests. In the last five years Barbara has knitted 43 blankets for orphanages and the underprivileged in need of warmth around the world. When writing her Will she has included Cabrini in the area of health.
“It’s really important to have Cabrini in my Will, because I want Cabrini to have access to funds to improve, and for new technology and training” she says. “I may never need to go there again but I’d like to think I could make a difference to other people who desperately need it.”
Barbara feels a wonderful sense of achievement by knowing she is helping Cabrini in the future. “One of the proudest moments of my life was making it to the top of Uluru, but leaving a gift in my Will to Cabrini makes me even prouder … Cabrini saved my life.”
Barbara knows that her gift sends a message of gratitude to all of the staff at Cabrini. “It tells you how I feel about Cabrini” she says. “It’s absolutely wonderful.”
